1. Have Your Fill at Whampoa Makan Centre
Whampoa Makan Centre is one of the most popular hawker centres in Singapore, and for good reason. From chicken rice to chilli crab, there’s something for everyone here.
The rojak (Malaysian spicy fruit salad) at Balestier Road Hoover Rojak – especially when coupled with century egg, is a must-try! Sing Hon Loong Bakery breads, done the traditional way, are also not to be missed.

2. Admire traditional shop houses at Balestier Heritage Trail
The architecture along Balestier Road is quite diverse and features two-storey shops with mixed styles that range from Early to Art Deco. The street corners have ornate Chinese Baroque style terraces like those at Kim Keat Road, Martaban Road, and Pegu Road.
You’ll find here the prominent Sim Kwong Ho Shophouse, which was built in 1926, and famous for its intricate Chinese Baroque style.

3. Eat at Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah
Have a traditional tau sar piah (mung bean pastry) at Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah. The fragrant, crispy-crunchy crust contrasts nicely with the rich mung bean filling.
This bakery also accepts pre-order so you don’t have to line up for hours (literally hours!) to get delicious pastries back home with you. Just remember that if you’ve placed a pre-order, you don’t have to join the long queue.

4. Dine at Founder Bak Kut Teh
You can find bak kuh teh (pork-rib soup) in Singapore! Imagine tender pork ribs in a steaming bowl of spicy, savoury, peppery, and garlic broth.
Though not cheap, this bak kuh teh is worth every penny with big chunks of pork. You can also ask for soup refills if you can’t have enough.

5. Buy Coffee at Lam Yeo Coffee Powder Factory
For coffee lovers, a visit to Lam Yeo Coffee Powder Factory is a must. This 60-year old family-run business knows their coffee.
You may pick from a variety of coffee beans, both local and international. If you’re unfamiliar with coffee, they’ll be happy to show you how to make it the most effective way. The prices are also reasonable.
